New Delhi: BS Yeddyurappa will continue as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made it clear on Monday that Yeddyurappa will not step down from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister as demanded by a group of rebel MLAs.
BJP President Rajnath Singh made the announcement after meeting the rebel Reddy brothers. When asked if Yeddyurappa will remain as the Chief Minister, Rajnath replied, "Yes he will remain the Chief Minister."
The decision was arrived after a flurry of meetings through the day, including a core committee meet attended by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha LK Advani, Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley.
G Janardhana and elder brother G Karunakara Reddy - the Reddy brothers of Bellary - and both ministers in the state Cabinet, had been lobbying to appoint Assembly Speaker Jagadish Shettar as the Chief Minister replacing Yeddyurappa.
Earlier in the day, the rebellious Reddy brothers had set conditions and had even insisted on the removal of Yeddyurapa in their meetings with the BJP top brass. They are yet to react to the party decision.
G Janardhana Reddy had been making life difficult for Yeddyurappa alongwith his two other brothers.
After meeting BJP's top brass, he had hardened his stand further.
"I am very confident that a new leadership will be provided in Karnataka," he had said on Monday morning.
CNN-IBN has learnt that the Reddy brothers have put forward four basic demands before the BJP central leadership other than a change of Chief Minister
The Reddy brothers want their choice of Home Minister in Karnataka and complete revamp of Bellary administration which is their stronghold. They also want all cases against Reddys and their supporters in connection with a kidnapping case withdrawn and government must speedily process permissions for all projects in which Reddys have interests.
They also want a portion of government advertising revenue to the Jagan Reddy owned Sakshi group
The BJP is now caught in a fix. On the one hand, it wants to protect its first Chief Minister in the south. But on the other it is also wary of the clout of the Reddys who are now claiming support of as many as 80 MLAs in their mission.
"We are confident of resolving this at the earliest," Arun Jaitley had hoped.
In less than a week, Advani will be turning 83 on November 8. The party which he founded is now caught in a fierce war of succession.
With his own authority now on the wane crisis like the one presently unfolding in Karnataka will not give him any reason to celebrate.
