Chennai: Stories are timeless and that is the reason why some of them though centuries old can still make for interesting viewing.
So after Krishna and Hanuman, it is time for Tirukkural, a venture in Tamil that will bring together yesteryear stories with contemporary animation.
Believed to have been composed by poet Tiruvalluvar between 100 and 300 BC, Tirukkural is a collection of 1330 ‘Kurals' or Tamil couplets- each with a moral.
"Tirukkural teaches good morals. We need to choose the right kind of stories to explain that particularly. If the story is accepted by a worldwide audience it will stay on for many years,” says Chief Technology Officer, Accel Animation Studios, S Muralidharan.
There are no flying cars or bullet spewing machine guns in Tirukkural but simple stories instead told through cute fishes and intelligent cranes.
As of now, 133 episodes of the 'Kurals' have been planned, each about seven to 10 minutes long, distributed worldwide by Long Tale- the international company which has distributed films including Superman and The Three Musketeers.
"Once these 1330 fables are strung together in to the 13 hours that we are planning, they are going to live for ever. It's like the Aesop's Fables, which were first written down 1000s of years ago that you can still read them today,” says MD, Long Tale, Omar.
So if you are in a mood to travel back in time to the days when your grandmother told you stories then it is possible to watch them on television now.
