Mumbai: For a sport that has been perceived in India more as a lifestyle game played by CEO's and head honchos only for relaxation, golf certainly has come a long way, fighting its way and getting more and more young ones addicted to it.
Meet Rahul Bakshi, a 17-year-old budding golfer. Rahul had to choose between his love for golf and cricket. And no prizes for guessing what seduced him in the end.
"First I used to play cricket. Then my dad told me to try my hand at golf. And then I started playing golf and I won one tournament. That's when I started becoming serious about it and I left cricket," Rahul says.
Amanjyot Singh's story isn't too different. Like Rahul, he too wishes to pursue the game as a professional. And like his pal, he too was introduced to the game by his father.
"I picked up gold because of my dad. I used to go with him. So gradually, I got to like the game and got into it," Amanjyot says.
With Indian golfers making an impact on the world stage, these kids are suddenly more confident of taking on the world.
"Even kids can play and become like Tiger Woods, (Jeev) Milkha Singh. So, it's nothing that only older people can play. Even kids can play," a little boy exclaims.
"I started playing golf at a late age, around nine and a half. You can't compare India with countries abroad because the kids who start playing golf here don't play for a long time," Amanjyot says.
And they are dreaming big!
"I like Tiger Woods the most," is Rahul's verdict.
"Tiger Woods," echoes Amanjyot.
"I would like to be Tiger Woods in future," adds another.
A far-fetched dream for now, maybe, but then sports and miracles go hand in hand.
