Youngsters dance on skates during Navratri

Surat: The young in Surat have a new way of dancing this year on Navratri — on wheels!

Decked up in the traditional ghaghra-cholis and other garba outfits, the youngsters, all between eight and 18 years, have traded their dancing shoes for skates.

Parth, a garba enthusiast said, “We need to concentrate while dancing because if we fall we might injure ourselves.”

Sakshi, another garba dancer who plans to set the stage on fire in skates said, “It took us a lot of time to master this dance form. We have practiced co-ordination of hands and other movements while skating. It's a different thrill altogether when we can do all the garba steps while skating. But earlier we thought it would be impossible."

These youngsters are all students of a garba dance academy that has been experimenting with new concepts every year. And this year’s unique dance form combining skates and speed has been called 'Dodhiyaa'.

Meena Modi, dance teacher of the academy said, “We teach them garba regularly and then skating. When the entire group dances together it looks beautiful.”

However, the only hurdle these dancers face is that dandiya dance-floors are not smooth enough, preventing these dancers from showcasing their skills before a wider audience.
