Gandhinagar (Gujarat): In the near future, DNA samples of every Indian citizen will be with the authorities. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar has been entrusted with the task of preparing a DNA database that will serve as model for other labs across the country.

Drawing inspiration from the DNA database models of US and British investigation agencies, experts at the FSL are busy preparing a software to store DNA samples. The laboratory has received a grant of Rs 1.4 crore and authorities hope that a well tested software and a DNA sample model database will be ready in the next 18 months.

"We will establish a model DNA database laboratory. It will be a model that all the labs of the country will have to follow," said Director, FSL, J M Vyas.

In the first phase, classification of DNA samples will be done for criminals, habitual offenders and accused. DNA samples of jail inmates, under trials and convicts will also be stored. The government will also gather DNA samples of the castes and tribes known to have criminal history.

It will be important for the FSL to get maximum samples at the earliest as DNA fingerprinting has become an important method to ascertain guilt or innocence of suspects. In the longer run though, this data may be used to investigate serious offences and terror activities.

"To begin with, we will classify the samples. Like offenders, prisoners and suspects," said DNA expert, FSL, A K Mehta.

The Central government is also likely to introduce a DNA Bill in the Parliament in it's ongoing winter session.
