1962 war veterans unsurprised by Chinese incursions Ladakh: As China remains inside the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control, CNN-IBN tracked down the brave scouts who stood face to face with the Chinese platoon in the 1962 war. Many from Leh fought the Chinese in the 1962 war and many were taken prisoners of war (PAWs).

Till today, Indian Army sees great value in recruiting and training locals to be soldiers and officers. In fact, it is the Ladakh scouts that are currently eyeballing the Chinese squatters in burthe.

Naik Subedar Chemmat Dorje won the Vir Chakra in the war India lost to the Chinese. He was a prisoner of war for eight months after he was captured in Demchok sector, which was ambushed during the formal ceasefire.

"They used to give us chapatis once in 3 days. No water was given. They almost starved us. We had to squeeze water out of rocks," recounts Dorje....more
