Madras University to decide on sports quota Chennai: The Syndicate of the University of Madras will soon decide on a proposal to provide a special provision for sports quota in its affiliated colleges, which has been a major demand from students for a while now. The seats under this quota will be over and above the current sanctioned strength approved by the University for the affiliated colleges. The proposal will be placed before the Syndicate on July 27 and once approved, will be implemented from this academic year itself.

Speaking to Express, Vice Chancellor Col G Thiruvasagam said that an analysis made by the varsity indicated that only 40 per cent of the affiliated colleges promoted sporting activities on the campus with any seriousness. It is a sorry state that many colleges ignore sports completely, he said. However, when the varsity questioned several of these colleges, an argument was put forth that there was not much incentives provided from the Universitys side for such students to take admissions in arts and science and colleges.

On the other hand, the government has allotted 500 seats in engineering admissions for such candidates. Therefore, it was decided that a provision earmarking seats specifically for candidates who have performed well at State, District and National level sporting events should be ushered in. Thiruvasagam said once the Syndicate gives the go-ahead for the proposal, the colleges would be dealt on a case-by-case basis. The colleges have to apply citing adequate proof that such candidates have applied for admissions and would
