New Delhi: The Congress has come out with a weak defence of Robert Vadra's statement about 'mango people in a banana republic'. Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary has said that the remark was meant to be taken lightly. Talking to CNN-IBN Deputy Editor Sagarika Ghose on Face The Nation, Chowdhary also said that Arvind Kejriwal has not yet substantiated his allegations against Vadra.

Vadra's comment came under immense criticism, especially from India Against Corruption. IAC member Arvind Kejriwal's associate Kumar Vishwas demanded that Vadra apologises for insulting India by calling it a banana republic. At his October 9 press conference, kejriwal also took a dig at Vadra. He started his press conference with a sarcastic reference to Vadra saying, "The mango people of this country sent us evidence and we are presenting that today."
Vadra deleted his Facebook account after a furore over his status message. Before deleting his account, Vadra reportedly wrote on his page, "Obviously it seems I have people on my Facebook account who do not have a sense of humour. Everything I write becomes news and further debates on television?? I have decided to delete my account." ...
