In Pics: The Vishwaroopam controversy so far

It was a dramatic Wednesday for Kamal Haasan's fans with the actor first addressing a press conference demanding for a secular state, then eventually succumbed to pressure and agreed to cut some scenes from his film 'Vishwaroopam'.

Kamal Haasan's film 'Vishwaroopam' was banned in Tamil Nadu on the insistence of some Muslim organisations which felt that it depicted the community in poor light.

Late on Tuesday night, the film got relief from the Madras High Court after the court decided to put in abeyance the prohibitory orders issued by the Tamil Nadu government to delay the film's release. However, the order has now been challenged by the state government.

'Parzania' to 'Vishwaroopam': Banned, canned and shunned films in India

Actor-director Kamal Haasan's controversial film 'Vishwaroopam', facing a two-week ban in Tamil Nadu amid protests by Muslim community, was released in Kerala but its screening was stopped by police in Hyderabad over security concerns. However, this isn't the first time that a film has courted controversy in India.Above is a still from the film Parzania, a 2007 drama co-written and directed by Rahul Dholakia and David N Donihue. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika in the lead roles. It was inspired by the true story of a Parsi boy who disappeared after the February 28, 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre. The film was banned in Gujarat.

Firaaq, a 2008 political thriller set one month after the 2002 violence in Gujarat, was banned in the state. The film went on to win two National Film Awards.

Black Friday, a 2004 film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, earned the ire of some political sections for focussing on the aftermath of the Bombay blasts in 1993. The film was banned in Gujarat.

Bollywood's most controversial stars of 2011

This year has been marked by controversies, right from the ban on director Prakash Jha's film Aarakshan to Pakistani model-turned Bollywood item girl Veena Malik's nude photo shoot for the popular men's magazine FHM.

Actor Aamir Khan raised many eyebrows when he appeared on the same platform as social activist Anna Hazare. While no one questioned his right to expression, he was accused by the media of using the popular platform for promoting his film ventures.

Director Prakash Jha said he does not want to blame anyone for the controversy over 'Aarakshan' that led to the film being banned in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. Jha had to move the Supreme Court against UP government's decision to ban the film for two months while Punjab and Andhra Pradesh agreed to release the film after minor cuts. UP released the movie after the apex court ruled in favour of Jha. The director, however, admitted that he suffered losses in these states because of the ban.
