
New Delhi: On Friday, a Rs 5.25 crore robbery in broad daylight left a security guard in the upmarket Defence Colony area of Delhi, bruised with gunshot injuries. The following day, came the news of a failed robbery attempt at a bank in Inderlok, and finally in the evening, as if to cap it all, another ATM cash van was looted by its own driver, who after drugging the two security guards accompanying him, ran off with Rs 51 lakh.
The spate of robberies have raised serious concerns about the security situation in the national capital. The fact remains that September 2012 has seen a new low in the crime graph of the city. Murders, heists and riots became the order of the day during the month.
In Alipur, a police constable shot his brother-in-law and his mother dead before committing suicide. In Bindapur, six people died after a jilted lover went on a shooting rampage. In Swaroop Nagar in outer Delhi, five people, including the two assailants themselves, died after the two men went on a killing spree. In Rajendra Nagar, a cardiologist was killed by an ex-Army commando. Mayur Vihar area of East Delhi remained cut off from the rest of the city after a riot claimed one life and left 32 others injured. In fact, in every kind of crime, Delhi has recorded more instances till August than it did the whole of last year.
