Karnal: Emboldened by the media glare following 15 rapes reported this past month, a 15-year-old Dalit victim has finally come forward to file an FIR against the men who gangraped her five months ago. They had allegedly even threatened her family forcing her father to commit suicide.
Gangraped, threatened, and silenced for five months. But no more. The teen finally filed a complaint at Bigna village, Haryana. Five months ago she said she was gangraped by two people from her village.
Threatened by the accused, she didn't say a thing, and her father, helpless and desperate, committed suicide. The victim's mother said, "They abducted her from the house and then gangraped her. She was then locked in a house. My daughter was threatened and that's why didn't open her mouth."
Curiously, the two accused were arrested five months ago. Not for rape, but abetment to suicide. Emboldened by the spate of reports on Haryana's rapes, the girl filed a complaint two days ago at Sadar police station in Karnal. In the past one month, Haryana has witnessed as many as 15 rapes. Unreported cases may be even more. But now with the media glare, will more such complaints come forward?...
