'Parzania' to 'Vishwaroopam': Banned, canned and shunned films in India

Actor-director Kamal Haasan's controversial film 'Vishwaroopam', facing a two-week ban in Tamil Nadu amid protests by Muslim community, was released in Kerala but its screening was stopped by police in Hyderabad over security concerns. However, this isn't the first time that a film has courted controversy in India.Above is a still from the film Parzania, a 2007 drama co-written and directed by Rahul Dholakia and David N Donihue. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika in the lead roles. It was inspired by the true story of a Parsi boy who disappeared after the February 28, 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre. The film was banned in Gujarat.

Firaaq, a 2008 political thriller set one month after the 2002 violence in Gujarat, was banned in the state. The film went on to win two National Film Awards.

Black Friday, a 2004 film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, earned the ire of some political sections for focussing on the aftermath of the Bombay blasts in 1993. The film was banned in Gujarat.

Preview: Mozilla's Firefox Metro browser for Windows 8

Mozilla has released its first version of its reworked Firefox web browser customised for the upcoming Microsoft Windows 8 operating system.

The development for the new browser began earlier this year. Google Chrome had also come up with Windows 8 Metro user interface support a few months ago.

The Firefox Metro preview for Windows 8 will run on both the Windows 8 'classic Desktop' environment as well as the new 'Metro' environment.

Big tech week: Nokia, Motorola and Amazon release new products

It was a big week for gadget announcements as Amazon, Nokia and Motorola all tried to generate interest in their products before Apple's expected announcement of a new iPhone next Wednesday.

Amazon.com Inc.'s 7-inch Kindle Fire is one of the smaller tablets with decent sales. Starting next Friday, it will sell an updated version with a faster processor, more memory and longer battery life. It will also cut the price to $159, from $199, making it far cheaper than the iPad, which starts at $399 for the 2011 version still on sale. (The most recent ones start at $499.)

Amazon is also releasing higher-end models under the Kindle Fire HD line. A 7-inch one will go for $199, while an 8.9-inch one will go for $299. There's also a $499 model that can use the 4G cellular networks that phone companies have been building. A data plan will cost an extra $50 a year. The smaller HD model will start shipping next week, while the larger ones will be available November 20.

Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD tablets, Paperwhite e-readers

Amazon.com showed off a larger, higher-end Kindle Fire for $299, taking aim at a fast-growing market now dominated by rival Apple.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, taking the stage in Santa Monica, California, unveiled an 8.9-inch version called the Kindle Fire HD.

Amazon also unveiled a smaller 7-inch version that will sell for $159, down from $199 for the old model.

Amazon adds $199 Fire to the tablet war

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Wednesday showed off the Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet computer. Analysts expected the tablet to be priced around $250, roughly half the price of Apple's dominant iPad, which starts at $499. The Nook Color e-reader costs $249.

Bezos also took the opportunity to show off a new line of Kindle e-readers with black-and-white screens and lower prices, further pressuring competitors like Barnes & Noble that are trying to break Amazon.com's dominance in electronic book sales.
