
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government bore the wrath of the High Court on Friday as it slammed the administration for "obstructing" the CBI probe into the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. CBI sources had said that the Gujarat government was opposed to one of its officers, Satish Verma, carrying out the investigations.
The HC bench tore into the government asking whether its duty was to cooperate with the agency or create hurdles in its probe. "What is the role of the state? To cooperate or create obstacles in investigation? The state is duty-bound to cooperate with the investigating agency," Justice Patel said. The judge added that the court was "unable to understand the state government's objection" to Verma.
Justice Patel further asked the CBI to focus on whether the 2004 encounter was staged.
The court's reactions came after the CBI submitted a report on the case before it on Thursday. The investigative body is yet to file charges in the case although it has questioned senior and former officials of the Gujarat Police as well as the Intelligence Bureau or IB....
