J&K infants deaths: Four suspended Srinagar: The medical superintendent of the government hospital in Baramulla, in which two infants died on Friday evening due to a power cut, along with three others, has been suspended. Sources also say criminal proceedings against them are likely.

The families of the infants claim the babies died because of lack of oxygen supply during a two-hour power cut. Acting swiftly after the infants died due to alleged negligence, the Jammu and Kashmir's Health Ministry suspended the medical superintendent and three others, after a probe committee nailed them for laxity.

Sources add the ministry is also likely to recommend criminal proceedings against at least two other officials, including a nursing staffer who was absent for hours and a generator attendant who did not put the ventilator support system on a backup after power failure.

Action was taken after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reportedly expressed displeasure over the deaths. "We found out the two infants were high-risk patients but at the same time we need to fix accountability," Dr Saleem Rehman, director of health services in Kashmir said. ...more
