Weekly roundup: Mobile phones launched in India this week

Here is a list of the mobile phones launched in India this week.Lava International has announced the launch of its Xolo Q700 smartphone that carries a Rs 9,999 price tag. The Xolo Q700 is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2. The phone has a 4.5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) IPS display and packs in a 2400 mAh battery. Sony's new smartphone, Xperia L, is available on e-commerce site Snapdeal.com for Rs 18,990. The phone will be dispatched in 7 business days, lists the website. The Sony Xperia L has a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen and is powered by 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core Processor.

Nokia 3310: This phone seems to be the default first phone for many users who purchased their first mobile in the early 2000s. Mobile phone turns 40: Journey of the cell phone pioneer Motorola

It's been 40 years since the first public call from a cellphone was made. On April 3, 1973, Motorola publicly demonstrated the world’s first portable cellular telephone and system. The first public calls using Motorola DynaTAC (DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) technology occurred in New York City.Motorola industrial product designer Rudy Krolopp helped develop the world's first commercial portable cellular phone, the Motorola DynaTAC phone.Motorola was the first to introduce a complete line of cellular subscriber products, including the DynaTAC models 2000, 4000 and 6000 family of vehicular phones and the model 8000 family of portable cellular phones.

MWC 2012: The biggest phones coming your way

Though many smartphones have been announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012, but only some phones have managed to catch our attention. Here is our pick of phones announced at the MWC 2012. Nokia has unveiled a new smartphone - the Nokia 808 PureView - at the MWC 2012, which has a 41 megapixel camera sensor with Carl Zeiss optics. Yes, you read it right. It's 41 megapixel! As you might have speculated, the 41-megapixel sensor does not mean shooting pictures the size of billboards. Instead, it's about creating pictures at normal, manageable sizes.The large sensor enables pixel oversampling, which means to combine up to seven pixels into one Samsung doffed the silk off its new projector smartphone - the Galaxy Beam - which is an Android 2.3 smartphone with a built-in projector at the MWC 2012. Powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, the phone has a 4.0-inch (480x800) TFT display. The phone has a 5 megapixel autofocus rear camera with flash and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. The Samsung Galaxy Beam's 15 lumens projector allows users to display and share multimedia content anywhere on a large luminous projector screen - walls, ceilings or improvised flat surfaces.

From batteries to the Razr: The Motorola story

Did you know that what we now know as Motorola made its beginning as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago in 1928? Paul Galvin started the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago to make battery eliminators for home radios. The Motorola brand was established in the 1930s when Galvin Manufacturing Corporation gained proficiency and experience in engineering, mobile communications and market building, and became a technology and equipment supplier to automotive customers. The company experimented various businesses ranging from TV manufacturing, handheld portable two-way radio devices to mobile phones.It was in 1973, Motorola demonstrated a prototype of the world's first portable cellular telephone. It would allow users to place or receive telephone calls from virtually anywhere in a metro area equipped with the DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) system. The Motorola DynaTAC phone received approval from the US Federal Communications Commission on September 21, 1983. The 28-ounce (794-gram) phone became available to consumers in 1984. The phone was later known as the Motorola was the first to introduce a complete line of cellular subscriber products, including the DynaTAC models 2000, 4000 and 6000 family of vehicular phones and the model 8000 family of portable cellular phones.

Nokia phones: Then to now

From paper to phones, the story of Nokia goes back to 1865 when Knut Fredrik Idestam set up his paper mill in southern Finland. Idestam's second mill was on the banks of the Nokianvirta river. Nokia derives its name from the river. After diversifying into rubber, cables and electronics Nokia entered the world, that it would later conquer, of mobile communications in 1968. In 1979 Nokia and Salora got together to establish Mobira Oy, a radio telephone company. 1981 marked a new era for Nokia when the Nordic Mobile Telephone service was set up. It was the world's first international cellular network and Nokia launched its first car phone, Mobira Senator, in 1982.The Mobira Talkman, a giant 'wireless' car phone was introduced in 1984. Much of the weight was attributed to its battery.
