Kolkata: Rolf-Dieter Heuer, director-general of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), acknowledged Satyendra Nath Bose's immense contribution to the study of elementary particles and to the eventual discovery of Higgs boson or the 'God particle' on the sidelines of a lecture at the University of Calcutta.
Though Heuer said that Bose should have got the Nobel, he nonetheless added that not winning a Nobel did not, in any manner, undermine his immense contribution.
Heuer reportedly also spoke about India's possibility of becoming an associate member of CERN. "The Atomic Energy Commission, I hear, has agreed to the proposal and (former) president Pratibha Patil too visited CERN in October 2011. Now we hope India will soon apply for membership," he said.
To become an associate member, India will have to make an annual contribution of 10 million Swiss francs to CERN. Considering that the biggest number of applications for internship CERN receives is from Indian students, this could be a quality investment. ...
