J&K: Child specialist overhauls hospital's image Srinagar: The GB Pant hospital in Jammu and Kashmir was in the news for all the wrong reasons till a few months back. It saw the deaths of 500 infants in a matter of four to five months. But all that is history now, thanks to Dr Shafqat Ahmad Tak, for overhauling the hospital system and bringing down the mortality rate.

Srinagar resident Shabir Najjar was back at the GB Pant neo-natal ward. Six months back his daughter died in the same ward for want of proper medicine and attention. Now, his newborn girl was being treated for an acute infection. But he believes that six months on, after protests over the death of 500 newborns, the hospital and the critical ICU ward has been totally overhauled.

Shabir Najjar says, "There is a lot of improvement now, there was no care in the hospital six months back. My daughter died here due to doctors' negligence. She had chest congestion. Our newborn girl is admitted here and she is being treated well."

For years the ICU ward remained ill-equipped and under-staffed and the doctors and paramedics working there lacked discipline and verve. But all that is changing now. More machines have come in and the man responsible for the change is Shafqat Ahmad Tak, a doctor who has great hands and a big heart that beats for tiny defenceless infants....more
