Double-ton Chris Rogers gives Aussies Ashes boost

London: Chris Rogers gave Australia a timely Ashes boost with a fine double century in Middlesex's county championship draw against Surrey at Lord's on Sunday.

Rogers hit 214 - his ninth first-class double century - to improve his chances of featuring against England after a five-year absence from the national team.

The 35-year-old left-hander has played just one Test, making only 19 runs against India at Perth in 2008. But the Sydney-born player gave the selectors a huge nudge when he added 83 to his overnight 131 off 67 balls with 10 fours and two sixes.

He was eventually dismissed by offspinner Gareth Batty having been at the crease for more than seven hours, facing 307 balls and hitting 20 fours and two sixes in total. As Middlesex skipper, he declared at 514 for eight leaving Surrey an unlikely 343 to win from only 48 overs....more
