Is Bollywood in regressive gear with more ghostly myths?

New Delhi: Ghosts exist and black magic works. At least in Bollywood, where the upcoming 'Ek Thi Daayan' is the latest in the list of films on witches, occult and the like, much to the dismay of women's groups who argue that witch hunting is not entertainment but a tragic fact that has led to women being targeted and even killed.

Recent films like 'Raaz 3' and 'Talaash' have propagated the myth in the name of entertaining audiences and 'Ek Thi Daayan' is the latest to tap into the regressive trend. Like 'Raaz 3' and 'Talaash', the film is a big budget one, co-produced by Ekta Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj with Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma and Kalki Koechlin.

The focus of the film, releasing April 19, is on the 'choti' (plait) of the witch. But Ekta shrugs off any concerns that her film might lead to further exploitation of women in the name of witch hunting.

"I don't know what is so regressive about showing a daayan's choti. Those cribbing should delve into folklore from which the film draws its inspiration," she said....more

From Bob Biswas almost pushing a heavily pregnant Vidya Bagchi in front of an incoming Metro train, to poignant scenes from Barfi, films in 2012 had moments that are worth reliving. At the top of the list is a scene that tugs at the heartstrings, from Anurag Basu's 'Barfi'. When Priyanka Chopra gets her shoes dirty, Ranbir Kapoor squats to clean them in the river water, not unlike a mother, and later the two hop along with their shows hanging by a stick to dry. There are many such endearing moments in Barfi, but scenes between Priyanka and Ranbir are bittersweet and memorable. The horrific scene, that almost stops your heart - Bob Biswas, played by Saswata Chatterjee, almost pushes a pregnant Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan) on to the tracks, in the way of an incoming metro train in Kolkata. The tragic scene in which a hungry housewife is forced to run crying out of a shop because she cannot communicate in English with the impatient saleswoman, is one of the best in English Vinglish. Sridevi, as the simple housewife Shashi, brilliantly emotes the humiliation and frustration of a woman unable to speak the language that rules the world.
