Win or lose, DMK leadership crisis to stay New Delhi: The DMK leadership crisis will continue no matter if the party wins the Tamil Nadu elections or not. With members of the first family of the state coming under public scrutiny and A. Raja already in the dock for his role in the 2G Spectrum scandal, it appears DMK has very few options to turn to.

It has been a conscious DMK strategy to project party patriarch M. Karunanidhis family members as future leaders. As daughter Kanimozhi is now being quizzed over the 2G Spectrum scam, Karunanidhis son Alagiri is hardly a popular leader. It gives a window of opportunity to Dayanidhi Maran who is already being touted as the party face in Delhi. But when it comes to the state, Karunanidhi will be reluctant to give up the familys mantle and pass it over to Maran.

That way, a victory for the DMK will still give Karunanidhi the confidence to go to the people and root for his family members. But that will not be welcomed by a multitude of party workers and second-rung leaders. If the DMK loses, he will lose all credibility. H may not have an option but to let others to step into the leadership shoes.
