World Health Day: 9.4 mn Indians die due to hypertension New Delhi: It's World Health Day on Sunday and the focus is on one of the biggest killers of this century. High blood pressure which affects one in three adults globally and 214 million Indians are projected to by hypertensive by 2030.

9.4 million Indians die due to hypertension every year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Nearly a third of young Indians - 33 per cent of men and 32 per cent of women under 25 - have hypertension or high blood pressure.

And yet, half of those who suffer from it, don't even know it and more than 40 per cent of those with high blood pressure do not have a family history. Though those with diabetes and heart trouble are at a higher risk.

Certain lifestyle changes can decrease your chances of getting hypertension by upto 50 per cent. Mainly cutting down salt intake and not smoking. Doctors also advice a healthy lifestyle. ...more
