Thiruvananthapuram: Meet Suryalayam, the messiah of the hungry Thiruvananthapuram: A man in Thiruvananthapuram is on a mission to ensure the poor do not go hungry. Feeding over a 100 people every day for the past 30 years, Suryalayam is known as the messiah of the hungry.

Every morning in a small restaurant on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, a 100 meals are cooked, packed and then handed over to Suryalayam Raveendran. He then takes off on his bike looking for those who've been waiting for one square meal for survival. In a country where hunger is the largest cause of death, he is a hand that feeds the poor irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

"Most of them are mentally retarded that I do service for. Some people are below poverty line. They are all my brothers and sisters, not beggars," Suryalayam says.

Driving through the city, stopping at the road side, bus stops, calling out to the needy and feeding the old and senile, Suryalayam has done this every day of his life for the past 30 years. A local entrepreneur he says money has never been a problem, but feeding 100 mouths a days is an expensive affair....more
