
Srinagar: The hardline Hurriyat Conference on Saturday demanded strengthening of security apparatus inside Indian and Pakistani jails to stop murderous assaults on inmates. "It is the responsibility of both countries to ensure safety of prisoners in their jails. We appeal for strengthening of security in the jails across the border and an immediate end to murderous assaults by prisoners on each other," Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani told reporters at his Hyderpora residence here.
The killing of Indian prisoner in Pakistani jail and critical injuries to a Pakistani national inside Kot Balwal jail in Jammu has fuelled concern and tension in the entire sub-continent, he said. "Hurriyat will write to Prime Ministers of both countries in this regard as they, in principle, are the custodians of the prisoners," he said.
Recent incidents inside the jails are backlash of the "political murder" of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was hanged in Delhi's Tihar jail in February and has left lives of prisoners in both countries in peril, Geelani said. "By hanging Guru, New Delhi has a caused a big security risk, which has led to tension and uncertainty in the region," he said.
