Guwahati molestation: Amar Jyoti Kalita, 10 others convicted Guwahati: Eleven out of the 15 accused in the horrific July 2012 molestation case in Guwahati were convicted by the CJM court on Friday. Those convicted included the prime accused Amar Jyoti Kalita who was seen in the footage of the incident, filmed by a local television journalist Gaurav Jyoti Neog, leading the maddened mob. NewsLive journalist Neog, who was made one of the accused in the case, was, however, acquitted by the court on grounds of benefit of doubt. Kalita, say sources, has been sentenced to two years in jail and fined Rs 2,000, while the others have been sentenced to one year in prison and fined.

The molestation incident, which was aired by a news channel on July 9, outraged the nation. The video clip showed a smiling Kalita in a red T-shirt trying to rip off the shirt of the girl as she walked out of a pub. He was joined by a mob who dragged and molested her. Media took up the incident on July 12, following which there was outrage in the country with activists demanding justice for the victim and action against the beasts.

Kalita fled Guwahati after the molestation video went viral on the Internet and was shown by news channels. He was seen in Odisha, Mumbai and Kolkata. Kalita was seen at the Howrah railway station only three days ago. Kalita is said to be a friend of Neog.
