New Delhi: Sky gazers can look forward to a partial lunar eclipse that will take place Thursday and will be first of the three eclipses of 2013, officials said on Wednesday. Earth's shadow will cover one per cent of the moon and will just touch the moon's limb.
The moon will not disappear and turn red but will get slightly darker than usual. "Only a tiny sliver of the Moon will be covered by the Earth's umbral shadow at maximum eclipse, the northern half of the Moon will be darkened from being inside the penumbral shadow," said Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) president CB Devgun.
"This is the second shortest partial eclipse of the Moon for the 21st century, lasting 27 minutes," added Devgun. SPACE is a private organisation working for popularising science among people.
The eclipse will occur on the intervening night of April 25-26-beginning at 11:31 pm and ending at 3:43 am and would be visible from all parts of India. "It will be visible from all parts of India. Unlike a total solar eclipse, which is visible only from a restricted zone of totality, this lunar eclipse will be seen from the entire night side of the earth," said Devgun....

Washington: An Indian scientist and his Taiwanese colleague have discovered a blue super-giant star located in the constellation Virgo, far beyond our Milky Way Galaxy. Over 55 million years ago, the star emerged in an extremely wild environment, surrounded by intensely hot plasma (a million degrees centigrade) and amidst raging cyclone winds blowing at four million kilometres per hour. Research using the Subaru Telescope, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's...

Russia will resume a long-dormant quest to explore the moon by sending an unmanned probe there in 2015, the head of the space agency was quoted as saying on Tuesday. The craft, called Luna-Glob, or Moon-Globe, will be carried by the first rocket to blast off from a new facility that Russia is building in its far eastern Amur region, Roskosmos director Vladimir Popovkin said, according to the Interfax news...

Mumbai: Indian students have been consistently performing well in the various science Olympiads. CNN-IBN met the champions of the Astronomy Olympiad. Mounting a telescope is a child's play for the 18-year-olds who made India proud at the Astronomy Olympiad held in Rio De Janeiro in 2012. For 14 years in a row, India has always been in the top two at the Olympiad. Aniket Sule, Reader, Homi Bhabha Center of...

Bangalore: At 1 am on May 6, the full moon will be at 3,56,954 km from the centre of the earth. This will be the closest full moon to earth since January 1912. The moon will appear larger in the sky than at any time. This event is also referred to as Supermoon. Early Sunday will see the moons closest encounter with earth since March 19, 2011, when the moon...

Cape Canaveral: Stargazers of the world are getting a treat this weekend. On Saturday and again on Sunday, Venus, Jupiter and Earth's moon converge for a brilliant night show. Venus and Jupiter already are lining up in the western sky. In mid-February, the two planets were 20 degrees apart from a viewing perspective. The gap narrows to 10 degrees by month's end. A crescent moon joins the show this weekend...

Firstly, let me just say that I am not a fan of that kind of cuisine (molecular gastronomy), I believe that food is about making you feel good rather than the chef feeling good. That being said, there are more and more people playing with it, but not very many people doing it successfully. I think knowing the science behind what happens is very, very important. What makes good cooks...

HYDERABAD: At first glance, the Celestron CPC 1100 Schmidt at the GP Birla Observatory looks nothing like the long, thin telescopes one has been accustomed to seeing in movies and science textbooks. But thats just the wonder of it. With an 11-inch primary mirror aperture and a wide, stout body for company, this powerful telescope promises to usher in a new age for space enthusiasts wanting to view galaxies 100s...

Washington: Planetary scientists claim to have uncovered a new stellar neighbour with the discovery of the closest young star to Earth. An international team has carried out a research and shown that the star, named AP Columbae, is the closest so-called "pre main-sequence" star, 'The Astronomical Journal' reported in its latest edition. "Pre main-sequence stars are much younger than the Sun. Using telescopes in Coonabarabran, Chile, Hawaii and California we...

London: Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard. The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond. "The evolutionary history and amazing density...

Washington: Some planets are just flipping backward. Of the more than 500 planets detected around stars besides our Sun, the vast majority appear to spin the same way the star does, scientists reported on Wednesday in the journal Nature. But some of these extrasolar planets spin in the opposite direction of the stars they orbit, astronomers found. These strange, backward-spinning planets are usually gassy giants called hot Jupiters, not rocky...

London: A phenomenon known as a white dwarf hypernova could have sucked alien life into a black hole. Scientists have been long baffled how despite years of searching there has been no evidence of life beyond our planet. But now some astronomers believe the answer may lie in the destructive force of exploding stars - and claim ET (extraterrestrial) may simply have been wiped out. Hypernovas are essentially massive supernovas,...

London: The Earth could soon have a second Sun when one of the brightest stars in the night sky explodes into a supernova. The cosmic phenomenon, which may happen as soon as this year and remain for at least a week or two, is expected to be the most stunning light show in the planet's history. According to astronomers, the Earth will undoubtedly have a front row seat when the...

Washington: Astronomers led by Indian American Nikku Madhusudhan have discovered a giant planet with an atmosphere and core dominated by carbon, raising the prospect that diamond-studded stars may exist. Madhusudan, a Banaras Hindu University (BHU) alumnus now at Princeton University, New Jersey, and his colleagues have observed that an extremely hot planet discovered last year has more carbon than oxygen - a feature never observed on a planet until now....

London: A 'super-Earth' discovered recently some 40 light years away could be covered with either water vapour or a thick haze, scientists have said. The planet, which is 2.6 times bigger than Earth, has given scientists their first chance to analyse the atmosphere of a world outside the solar system. A team of astronomers who used the European Southern Observatory's 3.6m telescope in Chile to analyse the planet's atmosphere said...
