New Delhi: Three convicts in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case have been sentenced to life after being found guilty of murder. The convicts who have been given life term are former councillor Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal. Two other convicts - former MLA Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokkar have been sentenced to three years imprisonment for their role in the riots.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had demanded death sentence for 58-year-old Balwan Khokkar, 68-year-old Gridhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal, who is 85 years old. The trio was held guilty of murder by District and Sessions Judge JR Aryan in the verdict on April 30.
While arguing for the punishment the CBI had sought death sentence for three of the five convicts in an anti-Sikh riots case as it told a Delhi court that they were engaged in "planned communal riot" and "religious cleansing".
The CBI also told the court that a riot finishes a victim, it makes him feel the attacker as a lion and also destroys the fabric of the society. So it's not only a rare but rarest of rare case, which requires death sentence, the agency argued....
