
New Delhi: The Maldives Anti-Corruption Commission has found that no misdeed was involved in awarding the Male International airport to Indian company GMR, according to media reports.
The $500 million contract with GMR had been terminated by President Waheed in 2012 following the Maldivian coup. The deal had been signed by former President Nasheed in 2010.
The Maldives government had cancelled GMR's airport project claiming that it was financially unviable. The termination of the project was seen as a major setback in the bilateral relations of India and Maldives.
Local media reports today said the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) 61-page investigation report into the alleged corruption in the leasing of the country's only operational international airport to GMR by the previous administration has declared there was no corruption involved in GMR's bid during the evaluation phase of the deal. According to the probe report, GMR had offered the highest concession fee and scored the highest marks in the bid to develop and operate the airport for 25 years....
