New Delhi: While Uttarakhand reels under floods with the Ganga flowing above the danger mark, Delhi too is under threat as the Yamuna crossed the danger mark on Tuesday. The Delhi government on Monday began evacuating people from low-lying areas along the banks of the Yamuna.
Apart from the capital, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments have also started evacuating people living in the low-lying areas along the river. The Yamuna river, which enters Haryana from Uttarakhand at Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district, had swelled since early Saturday after over 800,000 cusecs of water was released Monday morning through the Hathnikund barrage.
Arriving almost a fortnight in advance than its usual date, the southwest monsoon brought heavy rains in several parts of North India.
