100 Years of Indian Cinema: The 100 greatest Indian films of all time

As Indian cinema celebrates 100 years this year, we explore the magic of moving images from film industries across India in our tribute to the 100 best films of all time. The films from Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Bengali and Marathi industries among others reflect the passion, struggle and the genius of their makers in creating a cohesive history of a century of fascinating themes. This is only a qualitative list. We wish we could include the hundreds of films that deserved to be here and were left out due to space constraint. We thank our contributors in the last slide.Naya Daur (1957): Directed by BR Chopra, the Hindi film featured Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Ajit and Jeevan in pivotal roles. The film showed how the traditional Indian society was getting influenced by rapid industrialisation. The film culminates when a horse cart wins a race against a bus.Deewar (1975): Yash Chopra weaved a tale of two ideologically opposite brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) in such a way that the society indulged in a debate about corruption and honesty. Salim-Javed's screenplay of Hindi film 'Deewar' is considered as one of the finest screenplays ever written in India.

100 Years of Indian Cinema: Shashi Kapoor, the man who pioneered crossover films in India

Born in the 'Kapoor' khandan, Shashi Kapoor took to acting like a duck to water. After making a few appearances as child artist in film, he made his Bollywood debut in 1961. But unlike his father and brothers, Shashi Kapoor did not just stick to Bollywood films. He became the first actor to experiment with English films while simultaneously working in Bollywood films. Shashi Kapoor is one Bollywood actor who did not shy away from experimenting with English films at the nascent stage of his career. Within two years of making his debut in Bollywood, he was seen playing the lead in Merchant Ivory production 'The Householder'. Away from playing the typical 'hero' in Bollywood films, he also took up serious roles in his offbeat films. He played the role of a teacher who learns the nuances of a married life in 'The Householder'.

100 Years of Indian Cinema: The greatest romantic couples on celluloid

'You make me wanna be a better man,' Jack Nicholson famously said in the film 'As Good As It Gets'. These hit pairings on celluloid make you want to believe in the heady magic of love. We chronicle some of the greatest romantic couples of Indian cinema in the last 100 years. No love story is complete without the telling of the romance between Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt. Rehman considers Dutt her mentor and it was him who introduced her to Hindi cinema. They had memorable films together such as 'Pyaasa', 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand' and 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'. But as Rehman went on to become a star in her own right and Dutt withdrew into a shell, they drifted apart. A heartbroken Dutt is said to have committed suicide in 1964, leaving behind a spectacular body of work. The great-grandniece of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Devika Rani was one of the pioneering women in cinema. She married Himanshu Rai, the founder of the Bombay Talkies in 1929. Theirs was not a happy marriage. Himanshu paired with Devika in the 1933 film 'Karma' which also documents Hindi cinema's first on screen kiss between the lead pair.No one knows for sure whether there is any truth behind the rumours of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha's off screen romance, at a time when he was married to his co-star of many films Jaya Bhaduri. They have always maintained an enigmatic silence about their relationship in public. But their sexual chemistry in films such as 'Silsila' have made them one of the greatest romantic couple on celluloid in the history of Indian cinema.
