Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel lapped fastest in the opening practice session of Indian Grand Prix.

McLaren's Jenson Button was second fastest, and Alonso was third. The top three finishers in the first practice session were in the same order as last year's podium finishers.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was fourth on the timesheets and he would like to improve his performance after a poor show in Korea.

Sahara Force India: The journey so far

Sahara Force India Formula One Team was formed in October 2007 when a consortium led by Indian businessman Vijay Mallya and Michiel Mol bought the Spyker F1 team for 90 million euro.

Force India gained their first pole position in Formula One when Fisichella qualified fastest at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa; he finished the race in second position, less than a second behind Kimi Raikkonen earning Force India's first ever points and podium position.

The German driver from Red Bull is the current world champion, having won the championship in 2010 and 2011. He is leading the drivers' list this season, with 215 points to his name.

The 31-year-old drives for Ferrari has 82 podium finishes so far in his career, with 30 wins overall. He has 209 points to his credit and sits right behind Vettel in the drivers' championship.

The 2007 champion also competed in the World Rally Championship in the 2010-11 season before deciding to return to where he belongs - the Formula One. With 167 points, he is at No. 3 in this year's drivers' list.
