
The BJP-led Karnataka government has banned the export of iron ore in order to check illegal mining which has been rampant in the state. The decision taken by the B S Yeddyurappa government will prevent miners from transporting iron ore to ports in the neighbouring states. The state government has already banned issuing permits to transport iron ore and other minerals for exports. Will the ban on iron ore export help check illegal mining in Karnataka?

Kolkata teenager Rauvanjit Rawla, a student in one of the city's prestigious missionary schools, committed suicide on February 12 after being given corporal punishment in school. The boy's father has lodged a police complaint against the principal and four teachers of the school in Kolkata alleging they were responsible for his son's death. The teenager committed suicide on because one of his teachers had beaten and humiliated him in the school, he alleged. This is not the first instance of students falling victims to corporal punishment. There have been a rising number of cases of corporal punishment in schools across the country - both rural and urban India - with some resulting in deaths. Should there be a law banning corporal punishment in India?

In an early morning attack, Naxals struck again in Jhargram in West Bengal. Thirteen coaches of the Mumbai-bound Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Express were derailed and then hit by another goods train in Jhargram. Recent attacks show that the Naxals, increasingly, have started attacking civilians. Has the law and order machinery failed completely in the Naxal-infested states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh?
