Delhi: Unidentified persons beat up Pak diplomat New Delhi: Pakistan on Monday alleged one of its diplomats and his driver were assaulted by a group of people in New Delhi and called for an investigation into the matter by the Indian government. "This evening an unfortunate incident took place with a diplomat and official of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi in which both were assaulted by a group of people," the Foreign Office spokesman said in a brief statement.

"A protest has been lodged with the Indian government with a call to investigate the matter thoroughly and to bring the perpetrators to book," the statement said. The spokesman said the two persons involved in the incident a First Secretary and his driver "sustained serious injuries" and had been provided medical treatment.

An FIR had also been lodged with police, he said. In New Delhi, Pakistan High Commission spokesman Manzoor Memon said Zargam Raza, the First Secretary (Trade), was going to his home in Vasant Kunj from the mission in Chanakyapuri when two persons on a motorcycle hurled abuses at him near the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

When the diplomat objected to the abuse, Raza and his driver were allegedly beaten up by some people, Memon said. The High Commission lodged a strong protest with India's External Affairs Ministry and demanded an immediate and thorough inquiry into the incident....more
