
Mumbai: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has slammed the Maharashtra Housing Development Authority (MHDA) for shoddy repairs of buildings. The reprimand flagging off a red signal for a city that's getting ready to face the arrival of monsoons. While the Mumbra collapse highlighted the issue of substandard construction posing a danger to lives, the recent CAG report has come down heavily on the shoddy repair and reconstruction work carried out by MHADA in dilapidated buildings in Mumbai, endangering thousands of lives.
Rajamani and her family have been living in a Maharashtra Housing Development Authority-run transit camp for ever since the building in which she had a flat collapsed. The approval for their new home has been stuck in red tape for 33 years now. And with years of wear and tear, the Colaba transit camp is also on the verge of collapse and they have nowhere to go.
While residents of the Colaba transit camp could not draw a redevelopment plan, residents of the Sahajeevan building in Lalbaug have been running from pillar to post for the last five years to get MHADA to approve for their resettlement.
A CAG report squarely blames the Mumbai reconstruction board for the plight of residents of old buildings. It says delays in reconstruction have displaced 7872 residents. With no time-bound reconstruction plan, the board managed to redevelop only 7.5 per cent of over 19600 dilapidated buildings....
