Mumbai airport stops announcement system to cut noise pollution Mumbai: The oft-heard boarding announcements that would alert passengers at airports about the departure of their flights, is now a thing of the past at Mumbai's domestic airport. Departing private airline passengers at the airport will now have to rely on large display screens put up throughout the airport to find out the status of their flights. It's all a part of the airport's effort to cut noise pollution.

A spokesperson for the airport said, "We are taking small steps to make the airport experience and ambience more warm, relaxed and enjoyable for passengers. Being a silent airport is the new global norm."

While routine announcements over the Public Address system will be avoided, the airport will however continue announcing flight delays and diversions, lost baggage and medical emergencies.

Mumbai is the first airport in the country to implement such a move, with other airports planning to follow suit. Passengers though have mixed reactions. Some welcome it, others say it will lead to a lot of hassle....more
