Maya slams UPA on SC/ST Quota in Promotion Bill New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Friday lambasted the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government over the SC/ST Quota in Promotion Bill but also said that her party would continue to support the Central Government. Speaking to IBN7 Managing Editor Ashutosh, Mayawati said that the UPA was not interested in passing the Bill and working for the benefit of the Dalit community.

Babasaheb Bimrao Ambedkar had demanded reservation for Dalits due to the low social status of the community, Mayawati said. The BSP leader and Rajya Sabha MP said that even as the situation of the other backward castes had been improving in recent years, SCs and STs had not benefited and so reservation was the only solution.

Mayawati accused the Centre of pushing for reservation in promotion because of its anti-Dalit stand. The BSP chief said that her party forced the UPA to get the Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha. But the Centre took advantage of this move and did not get the Bill passed in the Lok Sabha. She pointed out that the incidents of December 19 and 20 in the Lok Sabha showed that the UPA was not in the favour of the Bill.

When asked about her party's support to the Central Government, Mayawati said that her party is against communal forces and has supported the UPA on many issues. She said that the government had assured her party about the reservation in promotion bill and so she had supported
