Samsung Galaxy S4: The good, the bad and the ugly

We intend to use the top weapon in Samsung's mobile phone arsenal for a little longer before we post our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Meanwhile, here are our first impressions about the much-discussed device that is the first phone with an 8-core processor.

The Galaxy S4 undoubtedly comes with impressive hardware specifications, but Samsung has bloated the device with gimmicky features.

At the first glance, the Galaxy S4 looks like the Galaxy III, but it has a slightly bigger display and a patterned back. Also the edges of the phone are less angular than the S III. In our eyes, the HTC One easily trounces the Galaxy S4.

First Ride: The newly launched Bajaj Discover 100T

Bajaj launched the Discover 100 T, which is positioned at the upper-end of the mass market, and is pitched against the Dream Yuga from Honda and Passion Pro from Hero MotorCorp. It is priced at Rs 50,500 (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Discover 100T shares a lot of things with the 125ST and the styling is the most obvious of these.

The way to tell the two apart is to look at the rear suspension - the 100T wears gas-charged twin shocks whereas the 125ST has its red monoshock nearly hidden by the matte black plastics.

While many gadgets surprised us this year with their innovative features and great performance, but a spate of gadgets and services on the other hand proved to be flops in the world of tech. Here is the list of the biggest tech failures of 2012.

Sony Smartwatch - It's biggest flaw is that this watch is only for Android users. So, if you don't have an Android phone, it's of no use. The Sony SmartWatch failed to impress us. It may be a gadget to flaunt but according to us it's not of much utility in day to day use.

LG Optimus Vu - Its odd shape is the biggest drawback. Its shape is not meant for a smartphone. It's too wide for a phone which makes it comfortable to hold. Any rectangular 5-inch phone is better than what LG came up with - a shape that lies in between square and rectangle.

While the Samsung Galaxy S III dominated the smartphone world in 2012, but the year witnessed the launch of many other phones that managed to attract people's eyeballs. Here is a list of the top 10 phones that hit the Indian market in 2012.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is the successor of the Galaxy Note phone launched last year. The Note II is a large-screened phone. The phone has a 5.5-inch screen. The phone is available at Rs 37,699.

It is the sixth iPhone model. Unveiled in September 2012, the phone hit the Indian market in November. The screen is bigger, but not big. It's the first time Apple has increased the screen size of the phone, from a diagonal of 3.5 inches to one of 4 inches. Apple has actually made the iPhone 5 considerably thinner. It was launched in India at a starting price of Rs 45,500.

Nokia's 41 megapixel camera phone comes to India

Nokia has finally launched its much-awaited 41 megapixel camera phone - the Nokia 808 PureView - in India at a price of Rs 33,899. The phone sports a 41 megapixel camera sensor with Carl Zeiss optics.

The 41-megapixel sensor does not mean shooting pictures the size of billboards. Instead, it's about creating pictures at normal, manageable sizes.

Soon to be launched phones in India

Here is a list of phones that will hit the Indian market soon. Some of them will be launched by the end of this month, while others will hit Indian shores early next month.

The phone will hit the Indian market this month, and is expected to be priced above Rs 30,000. The phone has a 41 megapixel camera sensor with Carl Zeiss optics. It features a 4-inch, ClearBlack AMOLED display underneath Gorilla Glass. It runs Symbian Belle OS.

The phone is already available for pre-order on online shopping site Flipkart.com for Rs 16,499. It has a 3.5 inch scratch-resistant TFT touchscreen, and runs Android 2.3 OS. The phone sports a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus.

India began the year by participating in the Asia Cup after a long gap of 27 years. Expectedly, they did not make it past an extremely tough group, and soon after coach Bob Houghton's five-year stint came to a controversial end. However, under new coach Savio Medeira, they ended the year on a high by winning a record sixth SAFF Cup title.

Undoubtedly India's biggest football star, Bhaichung Bhutia finally called time on his illustrious 16-year career after an injury-troubled season. Fortunately, fans will get the chance to give the striker a fitting farewell when he leads India out for a final time in an exhibition match against Bayern Munich in January next year.

Meanwhile, India found a new hero in Sunil Chhetri. After ending his frustrating stint at Kansas City Wizards, the striker signed for Mohun Bagan and also had trials with Scottish giants Rangers. However, it was with the national team that Chhetri shone, and his man-of-the-tournament haul of seven goals in India's victorious SAFF Cup campaign saw him win the AIFF Player of the Year award for 2011.
