The news agency said the rocket was fired on Sunday from a location near the southern town of Marjayoun, about 10 kilometers north of the Israeli border. It was not immediately clear who fired the rocket or whether it caused any damage or casualties.
The Israeli military did not confirm that a rocket was fired, but residents in northern Israel reported hearing an explosion. The military said it was searching the area and trying to determine the circumstances behind the explosion.
In addition to the Shiite Muslim Hezbollah militia, militant Palestinian groups are also known to operate in south Lebanon.
The incident came at a time of heightened tensions in Lebanon as Syria's civil war has spilled over into its neighbour with street clashes and other violence....

North Korea stepped up its bellicose rhetoric on February 1 threatening to go beyond carrying out a promised third nuclear test in response to what it believes are "hostile" sanctions imposed after a December rocket launch. The North frequently employs fiery rhetoric aimed at South Korea and the United States and in 2010 was blamed for sinking a South Korean naval vessel. It also shelled a South Korean island in...

North Korea said on January 24 it would carry out further rocket launches and a nuclear test that would target the United States, dramatically stepping up its threats against a country it called its "enemy". The announcement by the country's top military body came a day after the United Nations Security Council agreed a US-backed resolution to censure and sanction the country for a rocket launch in December that breached...

United Nations: The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned North Korea's missile launch and will continue discussions on how to respond to Pyongyang's violations of a UN ban on North Korean ballistic missile development, the council president said. Pyongyang: North Korea's much-anticipated rocket launch ended quickly in an embarrassing failure early on Friday, splintering into pieces over the Yellow Sea soon after takeoff. Within minutes of the early morning launch, the US and South Korea declared it a failure. North Korea acknowledged that hours later in an announcement broadcast on state TV, saying the satellite had failed to enter into orbit. World leaders were swift to denounce the...

Pyongyang: Impoverished North Korea rejected international protests over its planned long-range rocket launch and said on Wednesday that it was injecting fuel "as we speak", meaning it could blast off as early as Thursday. If all goes to plan, the launch, which North Korea's neighbors and the West say is a disguised ballistic missile test, will take a three-stage rocket over a sea separating the Korean peninsula from China before...

Pyongyang: Isolated and impoverished North Korea said on Tuesday it was ready to go ahead with its proposed long-range rocket launch, an announcement that sparked immediate condemnation from South Korea and Russia and a plea from China, its main ally, for calm. The launch of the Unha-3 rocket, which North Korea says will merely put a weather satellite into space, breaches UN sanctions imposed to prevent Pyongyang from developing a...
