Sheryl Sandberg: Facebook's first female board member

Facebook Inc named Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg a director, elevating the first woman to a board that includes seven men.

For years one of the most vocal critics of the gender imbalance in Silicon Valley's executive ranks, Sandberg, 42, joined Facebook in 2008 and played a central role in guiding the social networking company to its $16 billion IPO in May.

Her promotion comes as Facebook seeks to cultivate a more mature image as opposed to the college dorm-room startup reputation that has dogged the company since Harvard dropout Mark Zuckerberg founded it in 2004.

New networks: Social media services launched in 2011

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn may have dominated the world of social networking, but these are not the only options. There are many other sites too. Here is a list of other social networking sites, apart from Google Plus, which hit the world of social networking this year.

Erly: It was launched by former Kleiner Perkins partner Eric Feng. It is based on the idea that people want to organise their experiences - weddings, bike rides, or vacations, rather than people who participate. It is a new social platform for organising and sharing your personal content.

PeacePazPaix: Launched in October, it promotes peaceful resolutions via public votes. This site is said to be unique in the fact that it allows the public to submit disputes or arguments taking place within their day to day lives and gives the public the power to vote up who, within the argument or dispute, was actually right.
