
Mumbai: It is a controversy that's caught the interest of the entire nation. Chennai Super Kings team principal and son-in-law of BCCI chief N Srinivasan Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested by the Mumbai Police amidst high drama. Later, a defiant Srinivasan refused to step down.
Meiyappan was sent to police custody till May 29 after a three-hour long argument in a court. A tired looking Meiyappan had earlier been interrogated for several hours after a dramatic midnight arrest.
But it was the details of the argument made by the police, seeking Meiyappan's custody, which sent fresh tremors throughout the country. The police said they wanted to probe if Meiyappan was passing on team strategy to bookies to facilitate bets, if two phones used by him had SIM cards obtained by forging documents and whether he was placing bets upto Rs one crore through Vindoo Dara Singh.
As of now the sections applied against Meiyappan are the blanket sections applied against all the accused. Though the defense tried to argue arresting him when he responded to summons was illegal, the court favoured the police arguments for custody....
