Kolkata teenager Rauvanjit Rawla, a student in one of the city's prestigious missionary schools, committed suicide on February 12 after being given corporal punishment in school. The boy's father has lodged a police complaint against the principal and four teachers of the school in Kolkata alleging they were responsible for his son's death. The teenager committed suicide on because one of his teachers had beaten and humiliated him in the school, he alleged. This is not the first instance of students falling victims to corporal punishment. There have been a rising number of cases of corporal punishment in schools across the country - both rural and urban India - with some resulting in deaths. Should there be a law banning corporal punishment in India?
