Rakhee, Juhi Chawla, Waheeda Rehman: Leading ladies who have played character roles in films

They say actresses have limited scope in Bollywood. Several actresses in Hindi films may have started of as leading ladies in films, but soon were reduced to playing mother's and sister's role to their contemporary heroes.
After playing leading lady to Amitabh Bachchan in 'Kabhie Kabhie', Rakhee played his mother in 'Shakti' - a casting which seemed a bit odd to many. But the actress managed to pull off a stellar performance and still plays mother to many of the contemporary heroes.
The quintessential mother of hindi films, Nirupa Roy actually started her career playing the leading lady in films like 'Do Bigha Zameen' opposite Balraj Sahni. Eventually she played the mother's role in several films which starred Big B.
Although she was never the leading lady in any film, Farida Jalal played the romantic lead to heroes like Rajesh Khanna in 'Aradhana' and fiance to Rishi Kapoor in 'Bobby'. The actress, who now plays onscreen mother has also played on screen sister to Amitabh Bachchan.
Juhi Chawla was one of the top actresses of the 1990s. having worked with almost leading heroes of her time, post marriage Chawla started playing mother and sister's role in films. While she played Akshay Kumar's romantic lead in 'Mr and Mrs Khiladi' years later she played Akshay's sister in 'Ek Rishtaa'.
Bhagyashree made head turns with her debut performance in 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and then got married and disappeared for sometime only to resurface years later as Akshay Kumar's elder sister in 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'.
After featuring in films like 'Sainik', 'Henna', marathi actress Ashwini Bhawe played Salman Khan's elder sister in 'Bandhan'.
The gorgeous Waheeda Rehman was the number one heroine of the 1960s. Rehman played Amitabh Bachchan's wife in 'Kabhie Kabhie' and then few years later his mother in 'Trishul'.
Nargis played a much older character in 'Mother India'. In fact she met her future husband Sunil Dutt on the sets of the film where Dutt played her rebellious son.
Divya Dutta played the leading lady in films like 'Veer Gati' and 'Agnisakshi' but soon started playing small character roles in films where her contemporary actors played leading men.
