25 years on, does Meera Nair's 'Salaam Bombay!' hold relevance in today's time?

Mira Nair's path breaking film on lives of street children in the big bad city of Mumbai. On completing 25 years, the film was recently re-released at an star studded event in Mumbai.

The film was lauded worldwide for its realistic story telling. Several street children were used to play pivotal roles in the film.

The film also featured Nana Patekar, Anita Kanwar and Irrfan Khan.

The film narrated the story of Chaipur who comes to Mumbai in search of a job and how he gets engulfed in the dark underbelly of the society that exists in the city.

25 years after it was released, PVR pictures has re released the film. The film was screened in Mumbai where some of the cast and crew of the film were present along with other celebrities. Seen in the pic, filmmaker-actor Rajat Kapoor.

The film had won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1988, the National Board of Review Award for Top Foreign Film, the Golden Camera and Audience Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and three awards at the Montreal World Film Festival. After the success of the film, Mira Nair established an organization called the Salaam Baalak Trust in 1989 to rehabilitate the children who appeared in the film.
