Profile: Why is Nagarjuna a name to reckon with in Southern films
He ruled the hearts of many films like 'Criminal', 'Siva' and 'Hello Brother'. An actor, producer and an established star, we take a look at Akkineni Nagarjuna's cinematic journey.
The actor was born on 29 August 1959 in Chennai and started his career as a child artist in the 1967 Telugu film 'Sudigundalu' directed by veteran film maker Adurthi Subbarao.
And years later the actor made his debut as a lead actor in the 1986 Telugu film 'Vikram' directed by film maker V Madhusudhana Rao.
Also in the year 1988, the actor starred in 'Aakhari Poratam' directed by K Raghavendra Rao where he was paired opposite actors like Sridevi and Suhasini.
In 1989, Nagarjuna starred in the Mani Ratnam's romantic-drama 'Geethanjali' which became a major box office success and was critically acclaimed. The film went on to win the National Film Award for the Best Popular Film in the year 1990.
In the same year, Nagarjuna acted in 'Siva', an action blockbuster directed by film maker Ram Gopal Varma.
In 1990, the actor subsequently made his Bollywood debut with the Hindi remake of the same film titled 'Shiva'.
The actor then went on to do action films like 'Killer', 'Chaithanya' and 'Nirnayam' working with eminent directors such as Fazil and Priyadarshan.
The actor was ranked 56th in Forbes India Top 100 Celebrities in 2012.
The actor also owns the production company Annapurna Studios and is the president of the non profit film school Annapurna International School of Film and Media based in Hyderabad.
In the year 1996, Nagarjuna starred and produced the film 'Ninne Pelladatha', which was directed by Krishna Vamsi. The movie fetched him the National Film Award for the Best Feature Film in Telugu.
The next year, the actor starred in the film 'Annamayya' where he portrayed the role of 'Annamacharya', a 15th century Telugu singer and poet. It won him his Filmfare Best Actor Award and his first Nandi Award for the Best Actor.
The actor's subsequent releases were 'Nuvvu Vastavani', 'Ninne Premistha' and 'Azad'.
The actor with his wife Amala are the co founders of 'Blue Cross of Hyderabad' a non-government organization (NGO) in Hyderabad, India, which works towards the welfare of animals and preservation of animal rights.
