As the talented, sensitive and relevant filmmaker of present times, Mani Ratnam turns a year older, we take a look at 10 of the most memorable films by the filmmaker.
Mouna Ragam (1986): Actress Revathy played Divya, a woman torn between her past and her present. Married to Chandrakumar(actor Mohan) she asks her new husband to gift her divorce on the marriage night.
Nayagan (1987): This film clearly described Mani Ratnam's leaning towards popular filmmaking. He blended the story of a kind hearted gangster with that of the slum dwellers of Mumbai. The Karma completes a full circle when Velu gets killed in the end. Tamil film 'Nayagan' was India's official entry to the Oscars in 1988.
Roja (1992): Set in the backdrop of terrorism in Kashmir, Roja was a story of woman fighting the system to bring back her husband who has been kidnapped by a terrorist group.
Bombay (1994): A love story amidst the communal riots of Bombay was the theme of the film. Mani Ratnam captured the tragic moments of the situation without making it gory. Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala gave their best performance in the film.
Iruvar (1997): The film was Ratnam's take on the real-life rivalry between M.G. Ramachandran and Karunanidhi. Starring Mohanlal and Prakash Raj, the film marked the acting debut of Aishwarya Rai.
Dil Se..(1998): In spite of having stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, the film failed to ring the bells at the box office. Although it is still considered as one of Ratnam's good works.
Alaipayuthey (2000): Refreshing, youthful film about two lovers who elope and face troubles in their newly married life. The film starred R Madhavan and Shalini and was remade in hindi by Shaad Ali as 'Saathiya'.
Kannathil Muthamittal (2002): A gritty tale of a mother struggling to keep her adopted daughter, the film also highlighted the plight of LTTE in Sri Lanka.
Guru (2007): Based on Dhirubhai Ambani's life, the film narrated the story of meteorical rise of businessman and his eventual fall. The film featured Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.
