  • From new age zombie films, to quintessential love story, directors gave an interesting palate of films this year. Here is a look at the top 10 directors who showed promise.

    One of those rare films, where audience felt the film was better than the book. Director Abhishek Kapoor had already proved his mettle with 'Rock On' and 'Kai Po Che', which is based on Chetan Bhagat's 'The 3 Mistakes Of My Life', reaffirmed the fact that Kapoor was a gifted storyteller. Shot in real locations of Gujarat with backdrop of the riots that took place in 2002 in the state, the film narrated the story of friendship, religion and politics.

  • Debutant director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba brought alive a lower middle class locality of West Delhi on screen in 'Fukrey'. Even though the film did not feature any major star, it managed to strike a chord with the audience. Simplistic approach and hilarious story made 'Fukrey' a surprise hit this year.

  • Subhash Kapoor's 'Jolly LLB' had its humour intact, even though the film dealt with some grave issues plaguing our society. But Mohit Suri managed to make the youth believe and fall in love deeper with 'Ashiqui 2'. A heist film, 'Special 26' was based on real life incidents that took place in 1980s in India. Brilliant performances, tight script and racy narrative made Pandey second film a wonderful watch.

  • 27 year old Ayan Mukherjee's first film 'Wake Up Sid' was a coming of age film which struck a chord with cine lovers even though it did not really fall into the bracket of a commecial cinema. His second film, 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' was a typical Hindi film love story which had all the ingredients that are needed to make a film a blockbuster. And it was just that. Having earned Rs 182 crore at the Box Office, YJHD is bone of the biggest blockbuster of all time. And yes, Mukerji has clearly shown that he knows what it takes to make a film a hit.

  • The biggest credit of filmmaker Anand L Rai is that he knew eaxctly which actor to cast in which character for 'Raanjhanaa' and that made the film work brilliantly. South superstar Dhanush's debut hindi film made people believe in love all over again. Rai also managed to make the audience romanticize about Benares.

  • Even though the second half of 'Go Goa Gone' faltered, the witty one liners made this film a winner. Director duo DK and Raj gave the Zombies a funny twist and Saif a blonde look. End result: A hilarious film about rave parties, drugs and disoriented youth of the country.
