Phenomenal Persona

Deconstructing Amitabh Bachchan

Phenomenal Persona : From being a lanky newcomer, who was turned down at first, to ruling the film industry, Amitabh has scripted each word of his success story with élan. The trademark deep baritone voice, the tall, brooding persona made Amitabh the ideal "angry young man", who took the law in his own hands and fought the villain, thereby changing the face of Hindi cinema. However, that did not deter the actor from exploring comedy roles. He did full justice to films like Amar Akbar Anthony and Chupke Chupke where Bachchan was at his comic best. The actor’s off-screen persona hasn’t been any less ubiquitous. He is now a brand on his own. In 1999, Bachchan was named the Superstar of the Millennium in a BBC Online Poll trouncing legends like Marlon Brando and Charlie Chaplin. (Photo: Reuters)
