Deconstructing Amitabh Bachchan
Picture Speak: Amitabh Bachchan began his acting career in 1969. But it wasn’t before 1973 that the actor came into the limelight. Famous for his rich voice, he was initially rejected by All India Radio and even played a mute in Reshma Aur Shera (1971). Success came with films like Zanjeer and Deewar and Amitabh became emblematic of a new kind of action hero. The next decade propelled him to the pinnacle of stardom. Deewaar, Sholay, Muqaddar Ka Sikander and Don came one after the other and ruled the box office. Amitabh also gave hits like Chupke Chupke and Amar Akbar Anthony in which he played the comic roles. He was also successful as a romantic lead, with particularly notable performances in Kabhie Kabhie and Silsila. He came back with a bang in 2000, and catapulted into limelight with Yash Chopra's Mohabbatein. Since then the 65-year-old has not stopped and is still giving the younger actors a run for their money with his role in films like recent films like Cheeni Kum and Nishabd.
