Deconstructing Amitabh Bachchan
Deconstructing Amitabh Bachchan
The Politics of Friendship: Bachchan has been an immensely successful actor, but remained a failed politician. He began his political career in 1984 in support of long-time family friend and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He contested and won the Allahabad Parliament seat against H N Bahuguna, by 68.2 per cent votes, the highest victory margin ever for a parliamentary candidate. But he resigned after three years. His resignation was followed by tough times for him and the family. The actor was implicated in the Bofors scandal. But was eventually found not to be guilty. However, now his proximity to old friend and Smajawadi Party leader Amar Singh has been the talk of the town. It is believed that Singh helped Bachchan during a financial crisis when his company ABCL collapsed. The actor supports the Samajwadi party whether it is for election campaigns, or advertisement. Amitabh’s wife, Jaya Bachchan joined the party and became a Rajya Sabha Member. (Photo: Reuters)
