From tribal to traditional, from actress Kareena Kapoor to director Karan Johar, Day 1 of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 contained all the elements of a grand show! While young designers translated unconventionality and innovation into fabric, veterans sprinkled grace on the runway.

To start with, designer Pia Pauro tried to bring the spirit and feel to Mexico to Mumbai through her fashion show at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012.

Pia Pauro's collection was named 'Espiritu de Mexico'. Actress Monica Dogra walked the ramp for Pia in a shimmering one-shouldered jumper.

Pia's work included jungle dresses, swim wear and shorts, breezy dresses and kaftans, and flowing cocktail jerseys making for a colourful collection.

Followed suit was Payal Singhal's 'India in Colour' collection. Drawing regional inspirations for her colour palette in acid neons, her work retained ethnic with a new-found asymmetry.

Payal's collection that included ghagras, sarees, kurtas, tunics, dresses, jumpers embellished with abhla work (mirror) dominating mostly.

Popular singer, anchor and model Shibani Dandekar and professional dancer Puneet Pathak gave a glittering conclusion to designer Payal Singhal's show at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012.

Designers Jatin Varma's 'Dark Angels' and Shradha Murarka's (Vizyon) 'Enlightened Shadows' brought out dark, gothic glamour to the runway.

Couture in dark shades of black, midnight blue, stone grey and dark purple dominated the runway at Jatin and Shradha's shows. Amply added bling ensured many red-carpet qualifiers amongst their ensembles.

Talent Box is a forum that promotes young talent at the Lakme Fashion Week. Designer Anushka Khanna's 'Floral Fragments' kickstarted the Talent Box with Victorian romanticism in all its rigidity and feminity.

'Icons of Luxury', designer Ritu Beri's collection was inspired by the glamourous women of the 50s - seriously sexy, girly and romantic!

Designer Ritu Beri was quoted as saying, "My collection has been inspired by Marilyn Monroe, but the Marilyn Monroe of today. She is the woman who lives in every woman."

Interestingly, designer Ritu Beri's clothing was accessorised by hats and caps with big, ruffled flowers. Be relieved though, all her pieces ensured wearability.

As beautiful as the names of Pallavi's four lines: Sajala (Clouds with a Golden Lining), Mandara (The Mythical Tree), Elavia (A thing of Beauty and Grace) and Ayiana (The Eternal Bloom), were her heavily embroidered lehengas, sarees, anarkalis and ghagras.
