First Ride: The newly launched Bajaj Discover 100T
Bajaj launched the Discover 100 T, which is positioned at the upper-end of the mass market, and is pitched against the Dream Yuga from Honda and Passion Pro from Hero MotorCorp. It is priced at Rs 50,500 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Discover 100T shares a lot of things with the 125ST and the styling is the most obvious of these.
The way to tell the two apart is to look at the rear suspension - the 100T wears gas-charged twin shocks whereas the 125ST has its red monoshock nearly hidden by the matte black plastics.
Powered by Bajaj's patented DTS-I 4 valve and 100 cc engine, the Discover is equipped with features such as 30 per cent more power, two spark plugs and five speed gear box.
Handling felt neat and tidy except for the (to be expected) budget tyres which do the daily routine just fine but the few sportier riders buying the 100T will probably want to upgrade the rubber.
By adding the four valve head and twin spark plugs, Bajaj are extracting 100cc class economy and 125cc class performance from the 100T.
Bajaj say the reason the 100T looks like the 125ST is because firstly, it is the same brand - in that sense it is a brother to the 125ST. But more importantly, the curved sculpted bodywork and all are there to ensure that the 100T (which is to be positioned as a top-entry motorcycle or A3 segment as Bajaj calls it, as in competes with, for example, the Hero Passion) stands out.
"If we get our strategy right, we can do 40,000-45,000 units a month for the Discover 100T," Bajaj Auto managing director Rajeev Bajaj told reporters after the launch.
